Risk Matrix vs FMEA: When to Use Each

Both a risk matrix and an FMEA assess risk, but at very different levels of rigor. Choosing the right tool prevents under-analysis of critical risks or wasted effort on simple decisions.

Side-by-side comparison

Risk MatrixFMEA
RigorQualitative or semi-quantitativeQuantitative (RPN = S × O × D) or structured AP
Time requiredMinutes to hoursDays to weeks
Input neededRough likelihood and severity estimatesDetailed process/design knowledge, failure modes
OutputRisk level (high/medium/low) per riskRPN or Action Priority per failure mode, with recommended actions
Best forEarly-stage screening, project risks, HSEProduct/process design, regulated industries

Risk matrix axes

Severity (consequence) is typically on one axis and likelihood (probability) on the other. The intersection defines the risk level (green / yellow / red). Threshold actions are defined for each level.
