CQE exam day tips
The logistics and timing strategy for exam day deserve as much preparation as the technical content. Here is what you need to know—without any surprises on test day.
What you can bring
- Calculator: any silent, non-programmable, battery-operated calculator. The most commonly used: Texas Instruments BA II Plus, Casio fx-300, or similar scientific calculators. Graphing calculators are not allowed.
- Reference materials: the CQE exam is open-book. You may bring bound or tabbed reference books and notes. Common choices: the ASQ CQE Primer, a statistics textbook with tables, personal formula sheets.
- Government-issued photo ID (required for check-in).
- No phones, laptops, or recording devices in the exam room.
Timing: 175 questions in 5h 18 min
Do not spend more than 3 minutes on any single question in Pass 1. Flag it, move on, and trust that you will know more by the time you come back.
Quantitative question strategy
- Write down the given values before touching the calculator.
- Identify the formula (control chart limits, capability index, Cpk vs Ppk, z-score, etc.).
- Plug in—show your work on scratch paper so you can check it.
- Do a sanity check: Cpk of 5.0 is suspicious; Cpk of −0.3 means the process is centered outside the spec limits.
Final week schedule
- Day 7–5 before exam: One more full practice exam (timed). Review weak areas only—no new topics.
- Day 4–3: Formula review, key constants (d₂, D₄, c₄, z-table landmark values), and ASQ standards structure (ISO 9001 clauses, AIAG core tools).
- Day 2: Rest. Light reading of your personal cheat sheet. Confirm exam location and parking.
- Day 1 (exam day): Normal breakfast. Arrive 30 min early. Bring your calculator, references, and ID. During the exam: trust your preparation, flag hard questions, keep moving.
Common exam-day traps
- Not pre-tabbing your references. You will not have time to flip through an un-indexed book. Tab every critical section (z-table, t-table, F-table, control chart constants, AQL tables) before exam day.
- Over-relying on open book. Looking up every formula costs minutes. The candidates who pass fastest know the common formulas cold and only open the book for tables and edge cases.
- Changing answers without a good reason. Research on standardized tests consistently shows first instincts are more often correct. Only change an answer if you find a specific error in your reasoning.
