CQE vs CQA vs CSSBB
Three of the most recognized quality certifications from ASQ—each targeting a different role and body of knowledge. Here is a plain-English comparison to help you choose.
| CQE | CQA | CSSBB | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full name | Certified Quality Engineer | Certified Quality Auditor | Certified Six Sigma Black Belt |
| Core focus | Statistical methods, product and process control, reliability, quality systems | Auditing principles and practices, standards interpretation, corrective action | DMAIC methodology, statistical analysis, project management, change management |
| Typical role | Quality engineer, process engineer, R&D engineer, validation engineer | Internal/external auditor, compliance manager, supplier quality | Six Sigma project leader, process improvement director |
| Exam questions | 175 (160 scored) | 175 (160 scored) | 150 (135 scored) |
| Exam duration | 5 h 18 min | 5 h 18 min | 4 h 30 min |
| Open book? | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Experience required | 8 years work experience, 3 in a decision-making role (degrees reduce requirement) | 8 years work experience, 3 in decision-making role | 3 years in the CSSBB BoK; no degree requirement |
| Heaviest BoK area | Quantitative methods (21%): statistics, SPC, DOE, reliability | Auditing fundamentals (25%): audit types, planning, reporting | Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control (equal weight across DMAIC) |
| Overlap with the others | Shares SPC and statistics with CSSBB; shares corrective action with CQA | ISO standards, CAPA—skills also tested in CQE and CSSBB | Measurement systems, hypothesis testing—subset of CQE content |
How to choose
- Choose CQE if your work involves engineering analysis—tolerance studies, control charts, capability, DOE, sampling plans, FMEA, and reliability calculations. It is the broadest technical quality credential and is widely recognized in pharmaceutical, aerospace, and manufacturing sectors.
- Choose CQA if you spend most of your time planning and executing audits, evaluating supplier quality systems, or ensuring regulatory compliance. The BoK is process-oriented rather than calculation-heavy.
- Choose CSSBB if you are leading improvement projects using the DMAIC framework. It is project-focused and requires demonstrated project experience. Many Black Belts also hold the CQE; the statistics content overlaps significantly.
Common misconceptions
- “CSSBB is harder than CQE.” Different, not necessarily harder. The CSSBB has fewer questions and is narrower in scope (DMAIC-focused), but requires demonstrated project experience. CQE covers more technical breadth.
- “You need CQE before CSSBB.” Not according to ASQ. However, the quantitative skills in the CQE BoK make the CSSBB statistics section much easier, so many practitioners find CQE a natural first step.
- The certifications do not expire on their own. They must be recertified every three years via recertification units (RUs)—continuing education, professional development, or re-examination.
