CQE study plan
The ASQ Certified Quality Engineer exam is 175 questions (160 scored + 15 unscored pretest items) over 5 hours and 18 minutes. It covers seven sections of the CQE Body of Knowledge. A focused 90-day plan is enough for most candidates who already work in quality—here is one that works.
Know the weight before you study
| Section | Topic | Approx. % of exam |
|---|---|---|
| I | Management and Leadership | 11 % |
| II | The Quality System | 11 % |
| III | Product, Process, and Service Design | 13 % |
| IV | Product and Process Control | 14 % |
| V | Continuous Improvement | 16 % |
| VI | Quantitative Methods and Tools | 21 % |
| VII | Risk Management | 13 % |
Section VI (quantitative methods) is the single largest section and the one most candidates underweight. Invest time here first.
90-day block schedule
- Weeks 1–2: Read the ASQ CQE Primer (or equivalent reference). Map each chapter to its BoK section. Do not take practice questions yet—build conceptual foundations first.
- Weeks 3–4: Section VI (statistics, control charts, sampling plans, DOE, reliability). Work every worked example by hand. Use this site’s learn guides as a companion.
- Weeks 5–6: Sections IV and V (process control, continuous improvement tools). Practice building control charts, FMEA tables, and Pareto analyses from scratch.
- Weeks 7–8: Sections III and VII (design and risk). APQP/PPAP, tolerance stackup, GD&T basics, FTA, reliability models.
- Weeks 9–10: Sections I and II (management and quality systems). These are more conceptual—read carefully and use flashcards for definitions and standards (ISO 9001 structure, ASQ code of ethics).
- Weeks 11–12: Mixed practice. Take one full-length timed practice exam each week. Review every wrong answer—understand why you missed it, not just the right answer.
- Week 13 (exam week): Light review of formulas and reference sheets. No new material. Sleep matters more than cramming the night before.
What actually separates passers from non-passers
- Do the math. Work every quantitative example by hand at least once. Calculator proficiency with your exam-approved calculator matters as much as knowing the formula.
- Learn the open-book references. The CQE exam is open-book. Practise using your references quickly: know your z-table, t-table, F-table, AQL table, and control-chart constants cold enough to find them in under 30 seconds.
- Know the distractors. ASQ writes wrong answers that are plausible—often the result of the most common mistake (swapping Cpk and Ppk, using the wrong degrees of freedom, misidentifying the “vital few”). The “common exam traps” sections on each of these guides come directly from those patterns.
Common exam-day mistakes
- Spending too long on one hard quantitative problem. Flag and move on; return at the end.
- Forgetting to check if a calculated LCL is negative (set to 0 for attribute charts).
- Using Cpk where the problem asks for Ppk (or vice versa).
