CSSGB Quest › Study plan

8-week CSSGB study plan

A week-by-week plan for the ASQ Certified Six Sigma Green Belt exam, built on the six sections of the 2022 Body of Knowledge. It assumes some exposure to improvement projects; add two weeks if the statistics are new to you.

Start with a baseline. Take the free 20-question diagnostic before week 1. It scores you by section, so you know where to spend the extra hours.

How the exam is weighted

Spend time roughly in proportion to these weights, plus extra on your weakest sections. Check asq.org for the current exam format and rules.

The plan, week by week

About 6 to 8 hours a week. Each week: read the guides, work the calculations on the free calculators, then do practice questions for that section and review every one you got wrong.

Week 1: Baseline and the big picture

Take the diagnostic. Then learn how DMAIC fits together and the lean basics from Section I.

Read
DMAIC overview · Value stream mapping · Takt time

Practice
Takt time calculator · OEE calculator

Week 2: Define

Charters, the voice of the customer and scoping. Mostly concepts; know the parts of a charter and how VOC becomes a CTQ.

Read
Project charter · VOC and CTQ · SIPOC and process mapping

Week 3: Measure, part 1: data and basic statistics

Data types, sampling and the summary statistics everything else builds on.

Read
Data types · Basic statistics

Practice
Descriptive statistics and normality test · Binomial, Poisson and hypergeometric calculator · Normal distribution table

Week 4: Measure, part 2: capability and measurement systems

Capability indices and sigma level, Gage R&R, run charts. Expect calculation questions here.

Read
Process capability · MSA basics · Run charts

Practice
Cpk and Ppk from raw data · DPMO and sigma level calculator · Gage R&R calculator

Week 5: Analyze

Root cause tools, Pareto, and choosing and reading hypothesis tests.

Read
Fishbone and 5 Whys · Pareto analysis · Hypothesis testing

Practice
Pareto chart maker · t-test calculator · Confidence interval calculator

Week 6: Improve

Selecting solutions, removing waste, 5S and mistake-proofing; DOE at the Green Belt level.

Read
Solution selection · 8 wastes · 5S · Mistake-proofing

Practice
DOE effects calculator · Rolled throughput yield calculator

Week 7: Control

Control charts (which one, how to compute limits, how to read them) and the control plan.

Read
Control charts · Control plan and handoff

Practice
Control limits calculator · Control chart picker

Week 8: Review and timed practice

Retake the diagnostic and compare section scores. Spend the week on your two weakest sections and on timed mixed practice. Prepare your reference materials.

FAQ

How long does it take to study for the CSSGB?

Most people need roughly 6 to 10 weeks at 6 to 8 hours a week, depending on how much statistics and project experience they already have. Take the diagnostic first: your section scores tell you whether to compress or stretch this plan.

Is the Green Belt exam math-heavy?

Measure and Analyze carry 38 of the 100 scored questions and include calculations: capability, sigma level, basic statistics, hypothesis tests and control limits. The math is manageable if you practice it by hand.

Should I do Green Belt before Black Belt?

If you are new to Six Sigma or have not led a project, yes: the Green Belt covers the same DMAIC structure with less advanced statistics. If you already lead projects and are comfortable with DOE and regression, many people go straight to Black Belt.
