CSSBB Quest › Study plan
12-week CSSBB study plan
A week-by-week plan for the ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt exam, built on the nine sections of the 2022 Body of Knowledge. The statistics get the most time because they carry the most weight and the most calculation questions.

How the exam is weighted
Spend time roughly in proportion to these weights, plus extra on your weakest sections. Check asq.org for the current exam format and rules.
| Section | Weight |
| I. Organization-wide planning and deployment | ~8% |
| II. Organizational process management and measures | ~8% |
| III. Team management | ~10% |
| IV. Define | ~13% |
| V. Measure | ~17% |
| VI. Analyze | ~15% |
| VII. Improve | ~14% |
| VIII. Control | ~11% |
| IX. Design for Six Sigma | ~4% |
The plan, week by week
About 8 to 10 hours a week. Each week: read the guides, work the calculations on the free calculators, then do practice questions for that section and review every one you got wrong.
Week 1: Baseline, deployment and teams
Take the diagnostic. Then Sections I to III: how Six Sigma is deployed, the business measures, and leading teams through change.

Week 2: Define
Tollgate deliverables, charters, VOC and CTQ trees, scoping.

Week 3: Measure, part 1: data, probability and graphs
Data collection plans, probability distributions and graphical analysis.
Read
Data collection planning · Graphical analysis
Practice

Week 11: Design for Six Sigma and mixed practice
Section IX is small: DMADV, design for X, robust and tolerance design. Spend the rest of the week on mixed practice across all sections.
Read
Section IX: DFSS
Week 12: Review and timed practice
Retake the diagnostic and compare section scores. Work your two weakest sections, then do timed mixed sets. Prepare and tab your reference materials.

Habits that move the score
- Explain the wrong options. For every practice question, say why each wrong answer is wrong. That is what the exam tests.
- Do the math by hand first, then check it with a calculator. On exam day you need the method, not the tool.
- Keep an error log by section and by type: misread the question, wrong formula, arithmetic slip. Fix the pattern, not just the question.
- Know your reference materials. Tab the formula sheet and the tables you plan to bring, if the rules allow them, so you can find things fast.
FAQ
How long does it take to study for the CSSBB?
Most candidates need about 10 to 16 weeks at 8 to 10 hours a week. Those who already use DOE and regression at work can go faster; those new to the statistics should add time to weeks 6 to 8.
What are the hardest parts of the Black Belt exam?
For most people, the Analyze and Improve statistics: choosing the right hypothesis test, reading regression output and DOE aliasing. Measure (MSA and capability) is the single heaviest section.
Do I need a Green Belt first?
ASQ does not require one. Check asq.org for the current eligibility rules, which involve completed projects and work experience rather than a prior belt.
